Hello, Everyone. My name is ___. I arrived in New York City 3 months ago. I am working in Manhattan as a marketing team intern.

 

I found out what people say is true, this city never sleeps. There are so many new and exciting things to do here. I’m really enjoying my time working and getting to know the city. A friend of mine told me something interesting, South Korea is smaller than New York State. This makes me even more curious about the rest of states and how they differ from each other.

There is a Korean proverb that says “If you stay silent, at least you will be counted in the middle.” I heard this a lot growing up, especially from my mother. I used to agree with this proverb. If I remained quiet, I could stay in the middle, but soon I realized that you do not improve by just staying in the middle. I want to continue growing as a person. Instead of becoming a boss, I would like to develop my skills so I can become a reliable leader. If I think a great way to help develop these skills is to have a variety of experiences.

Especially when I went to Kenya 3 years ago for volunteering and participating in the work camp, I stayed with my co-workers 24 hours. And I had to manage that place and program. But at that time I couldn’t speak English very well, so I was shy to speak English. While I was quiet, I couldn’t feel any kind of achievement and communicate with my co-workers even though I thought “I’m a good leader” myself. Nothing changed.  

So I realized that I needed to change somethings like myself or environment. In reality, I could not change environments. I had decided to change my mind and myself to become more active and positive. After changing my mind, my coworkers and I were pretty close and more fun during working. It gave me some lessons. If I stayed quiet, I can be in the middle. But that is not helpful for me. I think to be a good leader is to communicate well.

I want to be a good leader. That’s why I apply for this program. I would love to have a chance to visit Seattle and Washington DC. I wonder how other interns like myself are adapting to their new cities and companies. It would be amazing if we could share some of the things we’ve already learned. And also through this program, I hope that I can get communication and leadership skills.
